#tbt: Energetic Catch and Release

Life's full of ups & downs. That's a given. There are going to be times when you feel like the parade royalty, and times when you feel more like the soggy confetti left on the street after the party. Frederick Buechner wrote, "Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid."
I love the reassurance in that quote. It's a beautiful "yes, and..." Yes, when we show up and participate fully in life, things happen - and we can do it without fear.
But how? If you're like me, you want answers. Tangibles. Step-by-step illustrations (even if you don't follow them, you find instructions reassuring).
One answer is catch and release.
Use your highly attuned human energetic supercomputer (your body) to "catch" the energy of the ups and "release" the energy of the downs.
When you're in the midst of one of the beautiful moments, capture a bit of that energy for later. Notice when you're feeling deeply in love, confident, at peace, whatever feeling you're relishing. Pause and really sink into that feeling, and observe what it feels like in your body. Is your head held a little higher? Your shoulders comfortably relaxed? Your heart rate smooth? Your facial muscles soft and smiling? Do you feel more like your true self? What's the picture that pops into your mind when you ask yourself what that beautiful moment looks like? What does that high vibration moment feel like to you?
Take a physical and mental inventory, then seal it in your cellular memory. Pick a small subtle gesture, tapping your thumb and finger together, gently tapping a collarbone, or pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth, for example. Do that action while you're steeping in that beautiful moment, with the intention that you can access that feeling again in the future simply by repeating that action.
That's your "catch." You can create an entire library of beautiful moment catches (if you're that organized) or you can simply let one action hold all the goods, trusting that your catch will bring up whatever you need most.
You can use your catch when you're heading in to a situation that stirs up anxiety or kicks you out of your space. A job interview. A first date. A public speech. A hospital visit. You get the idea.
I found a real-life example of this in my late grandmother. As a child, I would often notice her gently stroking one earlobe when she was in a happy situation. I remember asking her about it, and her telling me that her mother taught her to do that to seal in the joyful moments.
Seal in the joyful moments. Gorgeous.
Conversely, she had another tic when things were stressful, which brings me to the "release."
When Grandma was in one of life's terrible moments, she would rub her thumb across her forefinger in a circular manner. Again, it was something her mom passed on to her - a physical reminder to stay neutral, calm, and unafraid. I recall her doing it in a wide variety of situations, from gravely serious to what I considered very amusing (for instance, a tight bingo game).
It worked the same way as the catch, with the opposite function. It was her trigger to let things go. A wise person once asked, "Was it a bad day, or a bad five minutes that you milked all day?"
Yes, terrible things will happen. Yes, we can/have to show up for them. And we don't have to keep recreating them endlessly.
In our AMP (Active Meditation Practice) program, one of the tools that we teach is blowing roses. Simply put, you visualize a rose out in front of you, fill it with the energy of something, and kick it out of your space and explode it into dazzling fireworks. Release. Change the energy around you. Diffuse the fear, tension, anger, etc. Create space for your catch to fill you and your aura with the energy of your choice.
Energetic catch and release is a practice you can put to use right now, and take it with you wherever you go. Teach it to your children, and watch them handle the monsters under the bed on their own.
Practice energetic catch and release. Seal in the beautiful moments, and allow yourself to release the terrible ones.
And notice what happens.
